Roy Hargrove

Frozen Sessions

One of the best trumpet players of his generation, Roy Hargrove (Waco, 1969) received both critical acclaim and commercial succes during his career. Wynton Marsalis recognized Hargrove’s talent when he was still in high school. Hargrove studied at the New School in New York where he made his first recording with saxophonist Bobby Watson before releasing his 1990 solo debut Diamond In The Rough. The Lincoln Jazz Center Orchestra commissioned him to write The Love Suite: Mahogany. Hargrove always stretches and challenges his musical chops which can be heard on such albums like With The Tenors Of Our Time, Moment To Moment and Hard Groove, the latter with his hiphop-jazz band The RH Factor. For the afro-Cuban inspired album Habana and the Herbie Hancock/Michael Brecker collaboration on Directions in Music: Live at Massey Hall the trumpeter received Grammy Awards. Hargrove can be heard on albums by D’Angelo and Erykah Badu.
