Ruud Bruels (John Engels 80th Birthday Concert)

Frozen Sessions

Ruud Breuls (Urmond, 1962) is one of the biggest names on the jazz scene in The Netherlands. The amount of recordings on which the versatile bugel and flugelhorn player participates as a session musician is hard to count. Breuls performed with national pop artists like Marco Borsato and René Froger but also with international jazz cats such as Mike Stern and Joe Lovano. Since 1996 he is a member of the world renowned Metropole Orkest. On the side he manages to serve in the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and the Dutch Jazz Orchestra. Breuls rarely makes an album and that alone makes the excellent 2009 release Shades of Brown, a tribute to Clifford Brown, an important fact. On this album Breuls showcases the elegance and sparkling bebop of Brown and the sharpness of his all time hero Freddie Hubbard. In 2013 Breuls wins the prestigious Laren Jazz Award.
